What faucet height is suitable for a countertop basin?

Quelle hauteur de robinet pour une vasque à poser ?

A countertop basin is elegant, but it has one requirement: the tap must be chosen based on the basin, not the other way around. A model that is too low will hit the rim; a model that is too high will splash everywhere. Here is the method.

The key measurement: the height under the spout

The total height of a tap is not enough. What matters is the height under the spout: the distance between the countertop and the water outlet.

The rule: the height under the spout must be greater than the height of the basin rim, with a few centimeters of clearance to move your hands and fill a glass.

Tall mixers generally measure between 27 and 45 cm in total height. For a basin that is 12 to 15 cm high, a mixer offering around twenty centimeters under the spout is generally suitable.

The 3 measurements to take

  1. The height of the basin, from the countertop to the rim.
  2. The distance between the hole and the center of the basin. The spout reach (its length) must direct the water toward the center, near the drain, and not against the wall.
  3. The diameter of the hole in your countertop (often 32 to 40 mm for a single-hole mixer).

Beware of highly curved spouts

Some tall mixers have an arched spout. Their total height is significant, but the height under the spout may be lower than it appears. Always check this dimension on the technical drawing.

Too high is also a problem

The higher the water falls, the more it splashes, especially in a shallow basin. Aim for a reasonable gap between the water outlet and the bottom of the basin, and avoid very tall taps on small basins.

Undermount basin or classic washbasin: another choice

For a classic washbasin or an undermount basin, a low mixer is suitable. A tall mixer would look out of proportion and cause the water to splash.

Wall-mounted or countertop?

The wall-mounted mixer frees up the countertop and makes cleaning easier. However, it requires water inlets built into the wall, which must be planned during construction.
